Critical Note by Cinzia De Felice:
The Abyss of the Flesh: The Ferocity of Transfiguration in the Art of Federico Fiorenzani
Federico Fiorenzani, a photographer, visual artist, and high-end retoucher active in Tuscany, moves his visual research along a dual track of theatrical tension and geometric rigor—winner of the prestigious Amedeo Modigliani Foundation Photography Award in 2025. In the series The Abyss of the Flesh (I, II, III), the artist carries out a profound anatomical and spiritual excavation, evoking visceral deformations and a breathtaking existential isolation through stark chromatic dissonance. Here, the nude ceases to be a self-indulgent celebration of form, becoming instead a burning, sharp anatomy of the soul—a raw and desperate manifesto of human vulnerability.
Through a lens that is simultaneously ruthless and poetic, the process of transfiguration acts as a visual earthquake, violently shaking both the subject’s body before the camera and the eyes of the audience. Viewers are compelled to break through the surface and plunge into the stark psychological truth pulsing beneath the skin. It is not merely a matter of observing an altered body, but of feeling its tormented heartbeat, its silent plea, and the poignant, elusive beauty emerging right where form breaks down. It is a work that digs into the shadows with a fierce tenderness, laying bare a piercing fragility that surrenders blindly to the spectator.
For its extraordinary expressive power, formal perfection, and ability to transform the image into a visceral whisper echoing through the soul, I believe these works by Federico Fiorenzani unequivocally deserve a place on the podium.
